The technology itself was a bit complicated to explain because you could do many things with TiVo. They struggled initially because TiVo just looked like another cable box and people didn’t want another box to deal with. What was really powerful about TiVo was it made your TV viewing exponentially better and put you in control of when, how and where you watched your favorite shows. It literally made TV your way. To get people over the rational hump and stay focused on the emotional value TiVo could play in your life, we created a campaign that leveraged TV genre and tapped into the powerful insight of you are no longer beholden to the TV programming schedule–you decide. So, we tapped into TV genres, celebrities, Santa and other fun entertaining pop culture nods to bring TiVo to life. The most bizarre brief for TiVo: Make a TV spot about Tivo enabling you to skip TV spots–irony?
